Sulynn Hago is a Brooklyn-based guitarist, producer, instructor, songwriter, and singer whose playing spans from metal and punk bands to classical and jazz guitar. Hago's performances include DIY tours around the country to international shows and festivals. An eclectic and adaptable guitarist, Hago seeks the challenge of playing, improvising and writing guitar in as many styles and settings as possible, preferably on a classical guitar or an electric guitar rigged through a chain of effect pedals.

Within the music scene in Tampa where they grew up, Hago’s performance and writing experience started in punk bands, such as Ink and Sweat, New Bruises, Feral Babies, and Career. In 2012, their band Feral Babies received Creative Loafing's Best of the Bay Awards for "Best Local Punk Act" and "Best Local Metal/Hardcore" while their other projects received numerous accolades for their recordings and performances.

In 2015 Hago was picked among 400 applicants as touring guitarist for Canadian punk/metal band Propagandhi. For this accomplishment, in 2016 Hago received the "Best Embedded Local" award from Creative Loafing. In 2018, Career was awarded “Best Album Release Show” for their single 30-minute song release of Structures which Razorcake magazine responded with positive reviews: “This band from Tampa is clearly brimming with folks who know about music, not just its history but its structure. It’s interesting to listen to; it’s surprising. It’s dissonant and surprising and when the vocals do appear, they are exactly what you’ve come to expect from Florida—gruff, urgent, and strained. You fucking listen to this record; it doesn’t play in the background.”

I had no doubt the petite Floridian could shred – that’s kind of a must if you’re going to keep up on tracks like “Dear Coach’s Corner” and “A Speculative Fiction.” Who knew she would make it look so effortless.

Hago has been playing guitar for 24 years and has made it a lifelong pursuit to be instructed by as many instructors as possible. Some of the instructors who Hago worked with include classical guitarist Thomas Coffey, jazz guitarist LaRue Nickelson, jazz guitarist Peter Mongaya and jazz guitarist Kenny Wessel. Although most of Hago’s performance experience has been in punk and rock bands, Hago is proficient in classical, jazz, music theory, and improvisation. Along with expanding their knowledge through private instruction, Hago has consistently grown on the instrument through jamming and/or collaborating with hundreds of different musicians, teaching themself how to read music and expanding their repertoire through learning songs by ear. In November 2022 Hago began studying the Belcanto singing technique with vocal instructor Judy Hages. Hago earned their bachelor’s degree in Creative Writing from the University of South Florida.

A guitar instructor since 2009, Hago has taught hundreds of guitar students of all ages, levels and styles. They began teaching at Bigel Music (2009-2014) until they left to begin their own teaching business Tampa Guitar School in 2014. Although no longer under Tampa Guitar School, Hago continues to run their private teaching business which solely offers private online instruction. Hago specializes in the development of efficient technique, songwriting, creative concepts, performance preparation, and music theory studies. In 2020, Hago joined the roster of guitar instructors on jazz guitarist Julian Lage’s teaching platform Guitar.Study where they teach online masterclasses. They also began a Propagandhi Guitar Masterclass Series where they gave detailed instruction and technical breakdowns on how to play Propagandhi tunes in their entirety.

In 2018 Hago left their longtime home in Tampa, Florida and moved to Brooklyn, New York. Hago continues to tour with Propagandhi and performs in New York with the Chris Cochrane trio. In late 2023 Hago joined Chicago-based hardcore band La Armada for two shows in Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic and will continue to perform with the band.

Out of all the times I have seen Propagandhi, I think this was their best all out performance, which is already a high bar to pass. Sulynn Hago is so fucking good too; you don’t often get to see someone shred as intense and skilled as her, but it is a hell of an experience to witness it happen.”
